iPhone’s IPS vs Samsung superAMOLED

The iPhone craze stirs up interest in the smartphone world.  We noticed.  And if you are new to CareAce.net.  Welcome!

You have enjoyed this weeks article about the Comparison of iPhone 4 vs. Samsung Wave and Samsung Galaxy S. We wish we can do more than just data comparing things.  (Samsung give us a bone so we can prove your product!)  But what we can do is aggregate what we have found along in the discussions about the IPS and superAMOLED displays.  The general consensus is that the displays are just cousins of the same generation.  Both are a great leap forward but comparing the two to determine what phone you want to buy is nearly non-issue.

Let’s break down the numbers, thanks HDBlog.it:

Pixel Density of iPhone 4 (3.5 inch 960 × 640 with IPS technology) : 326
Pixel Density of Samsung Wave (3.3 inch 800 × 480 with superAMOLED) : 293 [the Wave is picked as an example]
iPhone 4 IPS technology offers the highest resolution on the market, extreme clarity for reading iBooks or viewing pictures and video with a good viewing angle.

Super AMOLED offers a higher viewing angle at excellent resolution and color rendering.  The depth of blacks are perfect because they are actually not powered on.

These videos are outdoor demonstrations:

A spokesman for Samsung in the WWSC10: “the iPhone display Retina 4 offers a 3 / 5% advantage in more in terms of resolution, but unlike the Super AMOLED mounted on Wave and S Galaxy, consumes about 30 percent more battery.”

However in Samsung Hub:

… when journalists asked questions to Samsung’s JK Shin related to iPhone 4 at Galaxy S’ launch in South Korea (that was barely after six hours), he turned it down because he was ordered not to say so. According to sources, “Samsung Electronics officials have been ordered not to speak publicly about the new iPhone.”

The exact reason for this is that though Samsung is a competitor in the mobile market, its other businesses act as suppliers to Apple and wouldn’t want to tread in Apple’s bad books because of some comment. Apple is one of most valued clients.

“Apple is our competitor in the complete product market, but it is our VIP client that purchases most of our key components.”

Fine… but an Android enthusiast says the following:

I think we are really splitting hairs here. Saying that the iPhone 4′s resolution is a must is kind of silly. The iPhone/3g/3gs had been rocking a 480x320 at 3.5″ which was 165 PPI.

Even if we account for the pentile matrix, where 2 colors are used per pixel instead of 3, the actual resolution we get is 653x392 instead of 800x480 (interpolated). So if we take 653x392 at a 4″ screen we get a PPI of 190.

We have 58% of the pixel density of the iPhone 4, however we have 115% of the pixel density of the earlier iPhones (which no one really had a problem with).

The point I am trying to make is that the pixel density is *fine* on the Galaxy S. Combine these facts of Super Amoled:

1.) True black (infinite contrast ratio) vs iPhone 4 CR at 800:1
2.) 1 MICRO seconds Refresh rate vs 5 mill seconds
3.) Infinite viewing angle vs varying degrees of brightness at different levels
4.) Emissive display has better color reproduction vs transmissive displays
5.) OLED doesn’t need a back-light so it’s thinner
NA.) Power consumption varies depending on scene. Black takes no power on OLED whereas it takes the most power on LCD. The opposite for white.

To top everything off, we’ve already SEEN pictures and video of what the text looks like. It looks very crisp in all the pictures I’ve seen.

So for me, I’d easily sacrifice pixel density for all the benefits OLED offers.
