Scalpers returning PS3s to stores
Eager entrepreneurs trying to make a fast buck on hot demand for the new Sony PlayStation 3 this holiday season have found themselves out of luck.
The initial supply of PlayStation 3 game consoles fell well short of demand and spawned a market of scalpers who picked up the systems.
But a last-minute surge in supply to electronics retailers has left many holding a PS3 with nowhere to unload them.
Dozens of people are trying to sell PS3 systems through classified ads for $800 to $2,000. Most are listed for around $1,000 and accept best offers. The retail prices for the two models in Canada are about $549.99 and $659.99.
Major retailers, such as Best Buy in Burlington and Future Shop in Hamilton, sold out the day it arrived. Both have received periodic supplies since then, including this week.
As of late yesterday afternoon, Best Buy had about three in stock.
Trevor, who didn't want his last name used, lined up for 18 hours to pick up PS3 the day it was released, and has been hanging onto the system since Nov. 17. The 23-year-old was waiting to sell it in the hope of making some extra cash.
"I figured, hold it to Christmas and everyone will be rushing to get one for their kids."
He's selling a 60GB system with one game and an extra controller for $1,540 or best offer. Although he's had a couple of responses to his ad, no deals have resulted.
Trevor,在首发的时候排了18小时的队,购入了台60G版的PS3。
“我计划等到圣诞,那时候所有人都会买台来送孩子的”
但直到现在,仍无人问津。
Dwayne Paul, 27, also hoped to make some extra money during the holidays by unloading a PS3. He's asking $2,000 or best offer for a 60GB system.
So far, there have been no takers.
"It's easy to get now," he said. "It's not a hot commodity."
Both said they plan to return the systems to the store.
Dwayne Paul,另一个想靠PS3赚点money的人,
同样没有卖出他的PS3。
“现在很容易就买到了,这玩意没那么热”
他们所有的人都计划将PS3退回。
But not Steve Romito. The 28-year-old has advertised his sealed 60GB PS3 for $1,000, but won't be sad if he ends up playing it himself on Christmas Day.
"If no one buys it, I'm not going to be disappointed," he said, adding it will be the scalpers who really lose out.
Of course, there are other in demand holiday toys.
当然,有些玩意在圣诞还是很热门的
Rob Alexander, business sales manager at Best Buy, said
the store is out of Nintendo Wii, another popular gaming system
.
Although there are fewer being advertised for sale than PS3s, Wiis for resale are starting at about $475.
It retails for $279.99 at Best Buy.
Dave Commisso, co-manager of the Wal-Mart on Rymal Road East, said
the store has PS3s but sold its last Wii yesterday
.
More could come in time for Christmas.
The new T.M.X. Elmo, which debuted in September, is also hot. Sellers are listing the doll for $70 to $100.
It retails for $42.99 at Toys 'R' Us and, according to the company's website, was out of stock as of yesterday afternoon. Mandeep Malik, a business professor at McMaster University, said a shortage of product can leave some consumers feeling they simply have to have it.
Others are just early buyers, willing to pay to have the new hot thing first.
Malik said there are also sellers who are keenly aware of the opportunity to make some extra cash during the holidays.
"When people get desperate, what are they willing to pay?
"Who knows?"
