Both consoles are different. Each have their good points and their bad ones


Being a Nintendo fan you would expect me to be biased towards the 3DS. But I do believe that the Vita is better than the 3DS in some ways. Firstly, it has dual analogue sticks, while the 3DS only has the one. Nintendo should have thought about that before releasing the 3DS, but they didn't. The Vita also has a larger screen than the 3DS, albeit not in 3D. The Vita isn't perfect though - the 3DS has much better backwards compatibility and is also quite cheaper than the Vita. What the fanboys and fangirls miss is that each handheld has it's good points and it's bad ones, and if they want to argue which is better they should do so with their wallets.
The 3DS and the Vita are marketed differently


Another reason not to compare the 3DS and the PS Vita is because of their marketing. Nintendo's strategy is focussing on the 3D aspect of the console, while Sony's is on the 3G connectivity with the Vita. Does the 3DS have 3G? No. Does the Vita have 3D? No. You can't compare apples and oranges, so you can't compare handhelds which are trying to be different. A recent commercial from Sony pointing out that the Vita has dual analogue sticks was taken as offence by the Nintendo world, but does the 3DS have them? No, unless you have a Circle Pad Pro.
The 3DS has more time on the market, which means more sales


Some so called "analysts" have made negative comments on each console's sales shortly after launch. Thickheads, the console isn't supposed to sell 5 million units in the first 2 days! Worldwide, the 3DS has sold 18.2 million units since March 2011, and the Vita has sold 2.5 million units since February 2012. Notice how the Vita was released ELEVEN months after the 3DS? Granted, the 3DS is selling better than the Vita, but it could still catch up once it has a year out on the market. Maybe it's the advertising, maybe it's because the DS and 3DS are dominating the market, who knows?
