VW of America issues stop-sale of new cars with EA888 engine built in Mexico

Volkswagen of America has ordered its dealers in the United States to stop sales of newer cars fitted with an automatic gearbox and its most common engine, the 1.8-liter EA888, saying that there is risk of a leak in the transmission oil cooler. The stop-sale order, sent to dealers and obtained by Automotive News, applies to cars build after Feb. 1.

According to VW spokesman Scott Vazin, the issue came to light when a supplier modified the specifications of an O-ring that links the transmission oil cooler to the transmission. He said that VW noticed the leak at the port of entry and moved to issue the stop-sale order.

While the carmaker has not issued a safety recall, it is holding discussions with the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on how to handle cars that were already in customers’ hands. VAzin said that in extreme cases, the issue could result to a fire.

VW commenced producing the turbocharged four-cylinder 1.8-liter EA888 at its Silao site in Mexico in 2013 with aim of increasing US sales through improved fuel economy. The EA888 was the base engine in the VW Passat sedan and Beetle starting model year 2014, and was available in the VW Jetta sedan.

Vazin said that around 25,000 cars are affected by the stop-sale order. According to the memo, “a follow-up communication will be released to dealers as soon as possible," and that the needed parts will be available within the next week. [source: automotive news - sub. required]

根据大众公司发言人Scott Vazin的回应，问题源自于一家供应商修改了连接变速箱与变速箱油冷却装置的O型环。大众已经注意到了这个问题，所以让经销商暂停销售相关车型。


虽然大众方面没有宣布召回，但是他们已经与美国国家公路交通安全管理局进行讨论如何处理已经交付给车主的这些车辆。Vazin表示在极端条件下，该零件可能会导致火灾。


为了提高在美国销售车型的燃油经济性，大众方面从去年开始在墨西哥的Silao工厂生产1.8升的EA888发动机。目前在北美市场装备这台引擎的有帕萨特、甲壳虫和捷达。


Vazin还表示这次一共有大约2.5万辆车型将暂停销售。根据大众发布的备忘录，“后续处理方式将会很快下发给经销商，"所需更换的零件也将在未来几周内到位。
