Rooney‘s an English Maradona

WORLD-CLASS Wayne? Yes, absolutely.

Best player in the world Wayne? Not quite yet.

Though it will surely not be long before we are crowning Wayne Rooney as the best footballer on the planet.

Alex Ferguson hailed the striker's display in Manchester United's Carling Cup semi-final against neighbours City on Wednesday as "world class".

The Red Devils boss was right - Rooney was a cut above everyone on the park.

The way he took the game to City merely underlined what most of us have known for a while: He is a genuine world-class performer.

While I do not believe he is the best player in the world at this moment, his display against City confirmed to me that he is the nearest thing to Diego Maradona these shores have ever produced.

I have thought this for a while but have resisted stating it publicly for the fear of piling more pressure on the Premier League's most talked-about star.

But after his latest matchwinning display, I realise I cannot keep the genie in the bottle any longer... Rooney is our Maradona.

The England striker has been compared to so many great players in recent years.

Gazza and George Best have been the ones closer to home, while England boss Fabio Capello likened him to Real Madrid veteran Raul. And you can see traits of all three players in Rooney.

Yet for positive impact on team-mates and goals scored, the current Argentina boss is the only logical comparison.

Just like Maradona, Rooney is a talisman to those who play with him at United and increasingly more so, England.

Cristiano Ronaldo's million world-record switch to Real Madrid has allowed Rooney to flourish even more at Old Trafford.

The ex-Everton starlet has taken up Ronaldo's mantle as United's talisman, star player, top scorer and matchwinner.

He is managing to lift players around him in the same way Maradona did at Argentinos Juniors, Boca Juniors and Napoli - not to mention at international level with Argentina.

Great - and I mean truly great players - have a knack of inspiring and bringing out the best in those alongside them.

On numerous occasions Maradona was able to haul his teams and team-mates to greater heights.

Often his presence was enough to inspire those around him and deflate those against him.

When that was not enough, he relied on outstanding skills, technique and goals.

That is what Rooney is doing now. He has become the biggest player at the biggest club in the world.

Like Maradona, he knows where the target is and like the Argy legend, he can score all types of goals.

Close range, long range, right foot, left foot and, as Manchester City discovered to their cost, headers as well.

It used to be claimed that, despite having many accomplished strings to his bow, Rooney's route to world domination would be blocked by a lack of prowess in front of goal.

That is a claim that no longer holds water.

Rooney's winner against City was his 21st of the season and, unusually for him, all of them have come inside the box.

He has finally uncovered a cutting edge in the box to match the razor-sharp play and dogged enthusiasm he always displayed outside it.

Rooney is evolving into the complete striker.

That is good news for England as we head towards what we hope will be a glorious summer.

And it is good news for United as they approach the telling final few months of the campaign.

Ferguson's men travel to Arsenal tomorrow for a vital the Premier League clash.

Given his current form, you would not back against Rooney scoring again. And further enhancing a growing reputation.
