The co-founder of Oddworld Inhabitants has suggested that the performance gap between PlayStation 4 and Xbox One is likely to dissipate over time.

Speaking in an interview with xboxachievemnents, Lorne Lanning observed that the learning curve for developing games for the next-generation systems has noticeably been trimmed in recent months.

“So I would say, months ago, there was a wider gap,” he said. “Part of it was the development systems,” he went on, adding that developers had complained that it took “twice as long” to get assets onto Xbox One in comparison to PS4.

“We’re hearing and seeing that that curve is getting closer,” he said. “I think at the end of the day when people maximize both systems, they’re each powerful enough[…] They’re in that class of when you watch the basketball, you’re going to be like, ‘Is that TV? Or is that a game?’”

Lanning had positive things to say in regards to the studio's experience in working on Sony’s new home console. However, he also acknowledged Microsoft’s progress with the Xbox One in its efforts to improve development tools.

“I think they’ve been improving the toolset really fast, improving the development environment and shaving that curve down… I think they’re getting comparable.”

“You know, if you want to run at 1080p, Battlefield, I’m not exactly sure how that’s going to tax the system at that higher end, but I’m sure in couple of years it won’t be a problem. We’re early.

“I have to say, the PlayStation 4 has been pretty amazing and that’s where we’ve been spending a lot of our time,” he continued. “But I don’t see a huge gap like there used to be. There used to be a significant gap.”

The company is currently working on Oddworld: New ‘N Tasty for the PS4, a remake of the 1997 PlayStation  classic, Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee.


While the game is currently due for release only on Sony’s platform, Lanning is taking steps to secure the title for Xbox One, too, as part of the ID@Xbox program.

你要知道,如果你想在1080P的效果下运行《战地》,我不确定Xbox One所能承受的压力,但是在几年以后肯定会不成问题。

我必须说的是,PS4非常棒,我们主要开发时间都在PS4上,但是他们之间的差距没有以前的大了。以前差距是非常大的。”

Lanning还表示两个主机前期的差距让他想起了Xbox和PS2的时代。据他的说法,当时为PS系统开发游戏的费用非常高。

他说:“这就是为什么我们支持最初的Xbox,因为Xbox当时比PS2和PS3那种艰苦的开发过程要好很多。”

Oddworld目前正在经历重制阶段,并且会登陆PS4。Lanning同时还在协商将游戏在Xbox One上发售的事宜。如果会谈成功,Lanning相信两个版本之间在性能上不会有明显的差别。

他说:“对于我们来说,我们不会占用系统很多资源,我们的游戏不是《战地》。对于我们来说,我不认为会在任一主机上遇到性能问题,我们肯定会达到自己游戏的目标,并且带有飞航动态的光影,粒子效果等。”
