February 3, 2010 - It spiraled out of control faster than anyone thought it would. About two weeks ago, Erik Brudvig posted IGN's review of Mass Effect 2, and in 14 article comments, the fight was on.

Rather than let Xbox 360 owners have a moment to read and reflect about how awesome their console exclusive was, some PS3-skewed fans high on Uncharted 2: Among Thieves decided to take the conversation to the most annoying depths of Internet hell and the 360 followers responded. In the IGN office, this war became a fun spectacle to watch. Some laughed and read comments aloud, others mentioned that a comparison was silly because Mass Effect 2 and Uncharted 2 are completely different types of games, and everyone pointed out the fact that these scores came from two different reviewers and thus were an "apples to oranges" kind of comparison.

The thing that a lot of people missed, however, is that Mass Effect 2 is indeed a better game than Uncharted 2, and I don't know how readers can be so blinded by their fanboyism to deny it.

Before I get going on breaking down why Mass Effect 2 is the greatest thing since sliced bread, I need to tell you that I still love Uncharted 2. It's a great game, it's totally deserving of IGN's Game of the Year 2009 Award as well as its 9.5 rating from Chris Roper, and I can't wait for the third installment. The trouble is that Mass Effect 2 is better.

What gets me with Mass Effect 2 is just how well done the story is and how much it makes me feel like I'm that character. When you build your Shepard up (or continue building him or her up if you imported your previous commander), you are that person. When I was choosing whether I would let squadmates shoot foes or if I would tell off space cops who were being jerks, I was making those decisions – it wasn't Drake or some other assigned character; this was a Shepard I had created and I was picking her path. There isn't that connection in Uncharted. Drake is Drake – he makes the call on what he is going to say or do and you're along for the ride. It's a great ride, but it's a linear one. In BioWare's game, you form friendships and then have to put those friends in harm's way and live with the consequences.

是因为这个游戏的剧情架构实在是太棒了 让我觉得我自己就是主角

当你渐渐提升主角(或是继承下你的 ME1 纪录开始提升你的主角)
你就变成了那个角色


当我选择要下令让我的队友们向敌军开火时
或是当我指派工作给浑蛋太空警察的时候
做指令的人是我 而不是 uc2 的主角 Drake 或是某个游戏指定的角色

我就是我所创造的角色(Shepard) 而我选择我自己要走的路

在 uc2 里面就是没有这种与角色的连结 Drake 就是 Drake
他决定他要说什么 他决定他要做什么 你只是站在旁边看他做这些事
整个过程不错 但是却只是一直线的剧情

但在 Bioware 做的游戏里 你建立起人际关系
而你必须亲手把你的朋友推入险境 并承受你做下的决定所导致的后果

Keeping with this story argument, I was more entrenched in what was happening in Mass Effect 2 than I ever was in what was happening in Uncharted 2. For starters – and this is the fanboy gripe in me – Uncharted 2 is pretty much using the blueprint from Uncharted: Drake's Fortune along with a series of other tried and true plot points. There's the obvious double cross, Nate and Sully find the first big clue in a dank cave just like "El goddamn Dorado," and who didn't see that Nate was still in love with Elena and predict the happy ending? Keep in mind that all the stuff I just mentioned was fun and I enjoyed the hell out of it, but it didn't really keep me on my toes. It wasn't until the "grenade scene" near the end of Uncharted 2 that I really had an "OMG, what happens next?!?!" moment.

但这种情节不会让我一直都很期待后续发展

直到接近尾声的 "手榴弹那一幕" 才开始让我觉得有
"天啊 接下来呢" 的这种感觉

Meanwhile, Mass Effect 2 is filled with those moments.

然而 ME2 则是从头到尾都让我有这样的感觉

From start to finish, I was enthralled with Jacob's loyalty mission – "What happened to his father? Why was the distress signal just going off now? Holy crap, no way, did he really do that to his own people? What's Jacob going to do?!" All of those questions ran through my mind as my team and I delved deeper and deeper into the tale, and this wasn't an isolated incident. Jack's loyalty mission, the "Joker quest," the final assault of the game – all of these tasks had me on the edge of my seat. I was desperate to keep playing and see what was around the next corner.

Now, I remember blowing off a few nights out and gaming until the wee hours of the morning with Uncharted 2, but that was more because I wanted to have the next experience and see how Drake's tale wrapped up. In Mass Effect 2, I couldn't put the game down because I wanted to know more about my crew and help them wherever I could. I got to be a part of these people's lives – Miranda's family, Thane's regrets, and so on. Sure, I have an unhealthy infatuation with Elena, but I know that I'm never going to know more about her than what Naughty Dog decides to tell me. In Mass Effect, you can drill down through all of these different dialogue trees and flesh out the world and its inhabitants. You can formulate real relationships with the people you want to be in a relationship with – you don't have to let the developer tell you if you're going to end up with Chloe or Elena… or Sully.

All of this flows into Mass Effect 2's domination when it comes to replay value. As much as I enjoyed building up relationships with Garrus (yeah, I got freaky with him) and Kelly in my 30-hour playthrough, I'm as excited to go back and destroy those relationships. The first thing I did after the credits rolled on Mass Effect 2 was import my character and start a new career so that I could see how the Renegade decisions differed from the Paragon ones, to see how awesome my upgrades were against lower-level enemies, and to continue my quest to Level 30. When I beat Uncharted 2 for the first time, I put down the controller for about two months and didn't pick it back up until I had time to slog through the title and earn my Platinum Trophy. Granted, I sunk more than a few nights into Uncharted 2's co-op campaigns and I know thousands of you can't stop playing Uncharted's competitive multiplayer, but it's not the same.

Of course, the stuff I'm lauding here comes down to differences in the types of games Uncharted 2 and Mass Effect 2 are. I'm not saying Uncharted needs to become a 30-hour RPG. In the same way Uncharted 2 can't compete in the character depth of Mass Effect, Mass Effect can't compete in terms of action. Hanging from a train and blowing away bad guys is an amazing segment in Uncharted. Still, fighting's no slouch in Mass Effect 2. When you're heavy warping bad guys into the air, Jack's hitting them with more biotic powers, and Thane's picking them off with a sniper rifle, that's a thing of beauty – and again, it's unexpected. As your powers level-up and your teammates change, so does the battle system. You'll move through enemies faster, take them out in more impressive ways, and so on. In Uncharted 2, you get new weapons every so often, but Drake's skill set it still his skill set. You're going to be engaging the enemy (usually by taking cover with your back to them) the same way in the last hour of the game as you did in the first hour of the game.

我上面讲的这些赞美多半都是因为 uc2 和 ME2 是两款类型不同的游戏所致
我不是说 uc2 必须要做成一个 30 小时的 RPG

同样的 uc2 比不上 ME2 的角色结构深度 而 ME2 也比不上 uc2 的动作场面
就像 uc2 挂在火车上面然后把坏人炸上天那一幕那样精彩

但是 ME2 里面的战斗场面也不是省油的灯
当你把坏蛋打上天空 Jack接着用生化攻击重击他们
Thane接着再用狙击枪解决他们

这一切真是艺术 而你事先完全料想不到

当你升级 随着伙伴的变换 战斗系统也随着变化
你会变得更适应战斗 以更妙的方式解决敌人

在 uc2 里面 有时候你拿到新武器
但 Drake 会做的事一样还是那些他只会做的事


你在游戏的最后一小时里面的玩法
跟你刚开始上手前的第一小时内的玩法是一样的

Yes, Uncharted 2 and Mass Effect 2 aren't the same type of game, they won't necessarily appeal to the same players, and comparing their pros and cons is a bit like comparing apples to oranges – but as gamers we need to be able to put aside system biases and say that one is better. For me, it's Mass Effect 2. The content, story, depth, action, and characters just dominate the competition -- even the mighty Nathan Drake.

是的 uc2 和 ME2 是两款不同类型的游戏 它们不见得会吸引同一批玩家
而拿这两者来讨论优缺点就有点像是拿苹果和柳丁来比

但身为一个专业玩家 我们必须放下主机情节并且判断哪款游戏比较好

对我来说 ME2 就是比较好

不管是内容 故事 深度 动作场面 以及角色
完全都把 uc2 比了下去

即使对手是伟大的 Nathan Drake 也没用
