Sepp Blatter, the president of the world soccer governing body FIFA, announced his surprise resignation on Tuesday.

It came less than a week after American prosecutors unveiled sweeping corruption charges against FIFA executives, and only days after Blatter himself won re-election for four more years.

As recently as Friday, after defeating a Jordanian challenger, Blatter told a FIFA meeting: "I'm not perfect. Nobody is perfect. But we will do a good job together."

ndictments unveiled by U.S. prosecutors accused nine current of former FIFA officials of accepting bribes and kickbacks from sports marketing companies that sell lucrative soccer marketing and media rights.

In addition, one FIFA executive was accused of selling his vote on the site of the 2010 World Cup for $10 million. Swiss officials have opened a separate investigation into how the 2018 World Cup was awarded to Russia and the 2022 World Cup to Qatar.
