PlayStation 3 overtakes Xbox 360 worldwide according to analysts

Despite leading the way in America, an independent report has stated that the global PlayStation 3 install base has finally overtaken that of the Xbox 360, leaving Microsoft in last place on the console leaderboard.

The article posted on Gamasutra goes on to state that Nintendo’s Wii console still holds first place with 75.5 million active units around the world, while the PlayStation 3 has garnered 43.4 million with the Xbox 360 just behind at 42.9 million units.

As mentioned in the article, it seems that it is the Xbox 360’s weaker performance in both Asia and Europe has held the Microsoft based console back from overtaking Sony’s PlayStation 3 worldwide, this despite it being a cheaper option to many.

Strategy Analytics Digital Consumer Practice analyst Jia Wu stated that “While the Kinect peripheral has given a boost to Microsoft’s Xbox 360 strategy, the console’s performance outside of the U.S. continues to disappoint” Wu also went on to say that global sales of the PlayStation 3 have outstripped the Xbox 360 two years in a row.

In North America, Microsoft has the edge thanks to sales of 25.4 million units when compared to the 15.4 million that Sony’s PlayStation 3 has built up, but in Europe the roles are reversed with Sony leading with 14.7 million while Microsoft is just behind with 13.7 million sales.

Despite the highly successful Kinect for Xbox 360 launch, new titles have been holding back the buzz, though Microsoft stated back in March that new “hardcore” titles were on the way.

Price drops for both consoles are expected at some point this year and surprisingly it could be Microsoft who will be the first to do so, something many would not have expected to happen. Despite the PlayStation 3 still remaining expensive in the eyes of some gamers, the boost from Blu-Ray sales and the recent 3D update could have helped sales over the past year.

PS3 Overtakes Xbox 360 Worldwide

Last week reported that the PlayStation had overtaken the Xbox 360 in terms of sales in Europe. However, it seemed as if the overall battle was still being won by Microsoft’s console.

Today, that assumption was challenged by a report by Strategy Analytics. According to Gamasutra, the report states that Sony’s black box surpassed the360 as early as December of 2010.

The report estimates that the PS3 is now owned by 43.4 million people, while the 360 is in 42.9 million homes.

"While the Kinect peripheral has given a boost to Microsoft's Xbox 360 strategy, the console's performance outside of the US continues to disappoint," analyst Jia Wu is quoted as saying.

"Global demand for Sony's PS3 has exceeded that of the Xbox 360 in each of the past two years, and we expect that to continue over the coming years.”

Neither company has come out to confirm the report, and it won’t exactly be a bombshell if they do, but it certainly is interesting to see how Sony has managed to catch up to Microsoft over the past few years.

As we said before, by the end of it all the two publishers will probably share honours for the current console generation.

Analysts, you have to love them right? So what have they been saying now then? How about that Microsoft’s console has lost ground to Sony’s as of the end of 2010.

According to data firm Strategy Analytics, the active install base of PS3s reached 43.4 million at the close of 2010 versus Xbox 360′s 42.9. The firm lays this drop for Xbox 360 at the feet of Europe, saying the console relative weakness in this area of the World “acts as a drag on its global performance,” even after factoring in Kinect.

Earlier today GameStop and IDG confirmed the PS3 is currently in the lead in Europe, with 14.7 million units to the Xbox 360′s 13.7 million units.

“While the Kinect peripheral has given a boost to Microsoft’s Xbox 360 strategy, the console’s performance outside of the U.S. continues to disappoint,” says Strategy Analytics’ Digital Consumer Practice analyst Jia Wu, who authored the report.

“Global demand for Sony’s PS3 has exceeded that of the Xbox 360 in each of the past two years, and we expect that to continue over the coming years,” Wu adds, recommending Microsoft “continue[s] to innovate around its motion sensor technology, which will become increasingly relevant in the smart home era.”

So what about the Wii? Well it still rules the roost, with an impressive 75.5 million active units worldwide.

愚人节这个节日真的是为软饭设立的

为了抢占市场

XBOX360

早推出一年

花费了上亿美元的宣传

为了让性能超过PS3，不惜运行功率超过本身限制，导致机器像个推土机一样响，最后导致大面积三红

为了争取独占软件支持，自己又没有本事做，只好大肆收买。甚至为GTA4的几个独占章节花费了5000万美金！（可是最后该跨的还是跨了）

可是最后呢？

还是垫底……
