Barcelona have reportedly continued their chase for Liverpool’s midfield hardman, Javier Mascherano.

The treble winners have been linked with a move for the Argentina captain even before the season ended and it is now believed that they could use French defender, Eric Abidal to tempt the Merseysiders to part company with their star midfielder.

According to Sport, Reds manager, Rafael Benitez is keen to bolster his defence, particularly at left-back and Abidal is a player who fits perfectly into the Spanish gaffer’s plans.

The Barcelona-based paper believes that the Blaugrana valuates the Frenchman at around 15 million, the same amount they purchased him for from Lyon back in 2007 and they would include the 29-year-old in a player plus cash deal to sign Mascherano.

Juventus have also reportedly shown their interest to sign Abidal, but the conundrum for Barca coach, Pepe Guardiola is that with veteran left-back Sylvinho set to leave the Camp Nou in a few weeks’ time, Abidal’s departure would force the club to look for two new defenders to occupy the left flank.

News of Massimo Moratti’s appearance in Catalunya on Thursday evening sparked wild speculation that the Inter chief was about to begin negotiations to sell Zlatan Ibrahimovic to Barcelona.

The Nerazzurri supremo reportedly had dinner with Blaugrana president, Joan Laporta in a restaurant and the Spanish press was there at the end of the meeting to push the two chiefs for some answers. But neither were too keen to divulge any information.

AS quoted Laporta as saying, “It was a dinner between friends. Nothing has been decided. This meeting took place because we have known each other for years and we share the same admiration.”

Moratti, meanwhile, offered by and large the same explanation, except he added at the end, “I like Ibra just as much as Laporta likes [Samuel] Eto’o. I do not believe that there will be an exchange.”

Moratti's declarations, however, could indicate that the Blaugrana might be ready to purchase the Swede with a full cash payment.

Recent reports had suggested that Laporta and Eto’o will meet in the coming days to sort out the striker’s contractual issues; while Inter coach, Jose Mourinho has supposedly given Ibrahimovic’s sale the go ahead, although he is expecting Eto’o, Ricardo Carvalho as well as Deco in return.

Former Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard has been named as the new manager
of Galatasaray.

Rijkaard has penned a two-year deal at the Ali Sem Yen Stadium in a bid to restore Galatasaray to a more appropriate league position.

2008-09 was a massively disappointing campaign for the Cimbom, who only managed to finish fifth in a season that saw both Michael Skibbe and later Bulent Korkmaz employed as coach.

Rijkaard, who has not coached since resigning as Barcelona manager in 2008, brings with him both club and international experience, having bossed the Netherlands to a final-four finish at Euro 2000.

The 46-year-old is due to arrive at Ataturk International Airport at 16:30 CET today before being unveiled over the coming days.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic could quickly agree terms with Barcelona if the Catalan club made an offer that was accepted by Inter in order to push through a move, according to his agent.

The long-running saga continued as the Swedish international's representative, Mino Raiola, again publicly acknowledged that a transfer to the Blaugrana would be welcomed.

After a swap deal involving Samuel Eto'o was dismissed in midweek, Ibrahimovic and his agent are making no secret about the player's desire to try his luck with the new European champions.

"I only know that if the two clubs find an agreement we would not have trouble agreeing with Barcelona," Reuters quote Raiola as saying.

Ibrahimovic was linked with a move to Barcelona last summer when it appeared that new coach Pep Guardiola wanted to off-load Eto'o along with Ronaldinho and Deco.

But the Cameroonian international stayed and netted 30 league goals this season as Barcelona netted 105 times in la Primera and almost 150 in total in what proved to be an incredible season.

In Italy, Ibrahimovic was the top scorer in Serie A as Inter also won the title, but towards the end of the season fresh reports of Barça being interested aroused the player's interest once more.

Guardiola is said to be a fan of the former Ajax star, but has yet to reveal whether he would prefer a powerful targetman like Ibrahimovic or a smaller, faster forward like David Villa.

Eto'o appears to be on his way out of Camp Nou as part of the summer shake-up that the club want to instigate to avoid a repetition of the complacency that set in after they won the Champions League in 2006.
