Ellie意識到必須離開的Joel的原因是後者已經把失去的女兒完全投射在了她自己身上。在失去Sarah之後，Joel一直在努力尋找一個讓自己活下去的理由。（以下是遊戲中Joel在最後回應Ellie描述她失去好友時的回應）

Joel: I struggled for a long time with survivin'. And you… (touches the watch his daughter Sarah gave him before she died) No matter what, you keep finding something to fight for.

而把Sarah投射在Ellie身上的結果是，Joel會把潛意識裡害怕再次失去Sarah的陰影無限放大直到影響他的判斷。Ellie知道不可能繼續和Joel生活下去的理由就是Joel已經剝奪了她選擇的權利。（以下是Neil原文）

“Then we come to that ending and that lie and that okay and what does that okay mean? It’s definitely not a complacent ‘yea I’ll go along with you’, in fact, it’s the opposite. It’s Ellie waking up for the first time, waking up and realizing she can’t rely on him anymore. While she loves him for what he’s done for her, she hates him for robbing her of that choice. She knows that she has to leave him and make her own decisions and mistakes.”

导演的解读在于Ellie是愿意献身的，Joel在没有任何沟通的条件下为了自己的感受救下了Ellie，而结局里Ellie对Joel理论有强烈的怀疑，这造成了她开始觉醒了解Joel情感里控制的部分，这个人绝对为她好，但在某种意义上也并非是一个能完全信任的人，这是她开始学会Joel保持一定距离的开端
这个是Neil Druckman的解读，他基本就是故事创作的核心所以也可以理解成官方解读，但他自己也说结局的信息没有封死，所以玩家的解读也不能说错
但我个人觉得导演的说法是最能解释春季篇在整个故事构成里存在意义的一种解读
