Why is iOS losing marketshare to Android?
这是Quora上的一个问题,回答排名第一(即被赞同最多的答案)如下:
Because Android is on phones selling at a half to a sixth of the price.
Apple's ASP for the iPhone is over $600 - HTC's is around $360, and the Chinese are now churning out smartphones that wholesale for under $100.
All of those are wholesale prices, and the iPhone is then subsidised down to a much lower price, but that $100 Android can be sold affordably on prepay or for free with a cheap contract.
So, it isn't that Android is 'better' than the iPhone - all it needed was to be 'good enough' and much cheaper. Of course, a $100 phone isn't as good as a $600 phone (running iOS or Android), but lots more people have $100 to spend than have $600 to spend. This is why Nokia's sales are collapsing - Android is gaining share from Nokia, not Apple
I did the chart below a few weeks ago to illustrate the difference between Android phones and Android tablets - the phones have a price advantage and the tablets don't. (Period is 12m to June 2011)
Update
If 'openness' is of itself the reason why Android is outselling iOS, why are Android tablets doing so badly? At least part of the answer has to be that Android tablets cost the same as the iPad.
