The Insomniac Fanboy Super FAQ http://www.thesixthaxis.com/2010 ... c-fanboy-super-faq/
It’s likely that yesterday’s news of Insomniac’s partnership with EA to produce multiplatform games hit you one of three ways. Ideally, you’re a platform agnostic multi console owner who greeted the news with delight, knowing that Insomniac will be working on fresh new IPs and spreading the word about their talents.
Equally, though, you might have been a Xbox 360-only owner who didn’t really know much about Insomniac or their games, and are now curious as to what lies ahead. And finally, you’re a hardcore PlayStation fanboy who’s loved Insomniac’s Sony-based games for years and feel like you’ve been stabbed in the back.
All valid responses, sure, but Insomniac, Sony and Microsoft have gone to great lengths to ensure everyone’s happy, especially over Twitter, and this FAQ will highlight how and why with links to official responses. Enjoy.
Will Ratchet and Clank, Resistance appear on the Xbox 360?
No, both of the above are Sony-owned IPs (intellectual properties) and will only appear on PlayStation-branded consoles. Resistance is owned by Sony, it’s not going anywhere.
Will Insomniac be rushing one game a year (or more) from here on in, or will the production slow down?
Insomniac have said that they’ll be spending more time on each and every game going forward.
Does this deal mean that there won’t be any more future PS3 exclusive games from the studio?
No, they haven’t announced anything else but there’s every chance that there’ll be more in the Ratchet and Clank and Resistance series.
Have Insomniac fallen out with Sony?
No, not at all, both Sony and Insomniac are keen to reiterate that the relationship is still great, and the studio is “still committed” to Sony franchises.
Will we see Insomniac’s new multiformat game at E3 this year?
No.
Will the PS3 version of the new multiformat game be better or worse than the Xbox 360 version?
If we know Insomniac it’ll be exactly the same. Their grasp of the PS3 tech is often unmatched, but we’re sure Xbox owners will be playing an identical game when it’s out. Certainly, the PS3 version won’t be any worse.
What will the new multiformat game be?
Nobody outside of Insomniac and EA know just now.
How many multiformat games will there be?
Just now the deal is for one new IP, and one game.
Why didn’t Sony buy Insomniac in the first place?
Because Insomniac wanted to stay independent. They’ve always worked on Sony consoles, but they’ve always been an independent studio too.
Will Insomniac start to work on other consoles other than the PS3 and Xbox 360?
It’s possible. Ted Price has said that the two HD consoles are enough “for now” but hasn’t ruled out the PC and Wii.
How does Sony feel about all this?
Sony are being incredibly supportive, apparently.
Will the number of PS3 exclusives drop from the studio?
It’s possible, although Insomniac are keen to point out that “nothing has changed along those lines”.
Hopefully that has gone some way to answering the questions you might have. Basically, PS3 only owners will get the best of both worlds and Xbox 360 only owners will get to sample whatever new magic the guys are cooking up. It really is a win-win situation, with Insomniac suddenly becoming the new darlings of the industry with one fell swoop.
