Liverpool are set to prove their financial difficulties are not to effect their transfer spending by launching a £10million bid for Real Madrid winger Rafael van der Vaart, according to The Times.

Reports earlier this week suggested Rafael Benitez had been left with just £1.5million left to spend before the transfer window closes on August 31st.

However, last night the club confirmed they were on the verge of signing Greek defender Sotirios Kyrgiakos and now there are a number of sources claiming they are close to agreeing a move for van der Vaart.

Reports in both the Spanish and Dutch press today also suggest a deal is close with the 26-year-old thought to be very keen on a move to the Premier League.

van der Vaart has made 32 appearances for Real since his move to the Bernabeu in 2008, scoring five times.

He also holds 69 caps for Holland, scoring 15 times for his country. A move to Anfield would see him team up with international teammates Dirk Kuyt and Ryan Babel.
