UEFA Champions League
Champions League Quarter-final
First Leg
Stadio Olimpico
Tuesday, 1 April; KO: 19:45 BST

-----------------------------------------------------

The game at the Stadio Olimpico on Tuesday night will incredibly be the fifth time that these two sides have met in the past 12 months.

Despite all the talk of revenge, it remains to be seen if the Giallorossi have mentally recovered from the painful 7-1 thrashing they received at
Old Trafford that saw them crash out 8-3 on aggregate at this stage of the competition last season.

Roma and Man Utd met in the group stages this term, with the English champions winning 1-0 at Old Trafford,
and the game finishing 1-1 in a dead-rubber match in the Eternal City.

The Italians’ performances in these games, particularly in the former, when they deserved at least a draw,
perhaps suggests that they have recovered psychologically.

Roma go into the match having been in fantastic form over the past month.
They have cut Inter’s lead at the top of Serie A from 11 points to just four, although they did miss a brilliant chance to move even closer
when they could only manage a 1-1 draw at Cagliari at the weekend.

The Giallorossi performed wonderfully in the last round in knocking out Spanish champions, and league-leaders, Real Madrid 4-2 on aggregate.

Luciano Spalletti’s men won both legs 2-1, but it was in the return game at the Santiago Bernabeu when they particularly impressed,
with Daniele De Rossi and Alberto Aquilani monsters in the midfield.

Roma are in fact Italy’s only remaining representatives in the Champions League, and they will be hoping not to follow
Inter and Milan in losing to English opposition.

Manchester United are hot favourites to progress past Roma, and into the semi-finals for the second year in succession.

The Red Devils seemingly have everything in their favour.
Their 8-3 win last season may have given them the mental edge, but more importantly they are in quite stunning form at present.

They have won their last four games without conceding a goal, and have thrashed

Aston Villa

and

Liverpool

4-0 and 3-0 respectively most recently

With just six games left of the Premiership season, they hold an authoritative five-point lead over Chelsea at the top of the table.

Confidence could not be any higher, and all of the team’s key players, the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand,
are seemingly at the top of their game.

There is a real belief that this could be the year that they win the Champions League again.
The last time Sir Alex Ferguson’s men triumphed in the competition was in 1999, when they staged
an incredible injury time comeback to beat

Bayern Munich 2-1 in Barcelona

TEAM NEWS

Roma were dealt a huge blow when inspirational captain and club symbol Francesco Totti was ruled out with a thigh strain
picked up in the 1-1 draw with Cagliari on Saturday.
Totti now faces a race against time to make the second leg at Old Trafford.

Daniele De Rossi, Simone Perrotta, and Mirko Vucinic, who will take Totti’s place as the lone frontman, return from their domestic suspensions.
Juan missed the Cagliari game with injury, and it remains to be seen if he makes Tuesday’s game.
If not, Matteo Ferrari will continue to deputize.

Sir Alex Ferguson is without Darrren Fletcher who has been ruled out for six weeks.
Mikael Silvestre and Gary Neville are still not ready to return, but Louis Saha may be back in contention.

Michael Carrick, Patrice Evra, Ryan Giggs and Rio Ferdinand all picked up slight hamstring injuries against Aston Villa, but all should be fit to play.
Edwin Van der Sar is a doubt with a groin problem.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Mirko Vucinic

Roma’s chances in this tie, following Francesco Totti’s injury, will rely heavily on his replacement up-front Mirko Vucinic.

The Montenegrin has been in fantastic form in the Champions League this season, scoring four times,
including against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu in the last 16.
Filling Totti’s boots is no mean task, but if Roma are to surprise the English champions they need Vucinic to be at his best.

Cristiano Ronaldo

The Portuguese wizard is having a quite sensational season, and scored a brilliant back-heeled strike against
Aston Villa at the weekend – his 26th goals in as many games in the Premiership.

He has been just as impressive in the Champions League, and Roma will still be having nightmares after
his inspirational performance in last year’s 8-3 aggregate rout.
Roma must stop Ronaldo if they are to stop Man Utd.

BIG MATCH STATS

Head-to-heads

AS Roma and Manchester United have met four times before in European competition.

Last season, on 4 April 2007, AS Roma won 2-1 at home in the CL quarter-finals, but Manchester United
recorded an emphatic 7-1 victory at Old Trafford six days later, to progress to the semi-finals.

It was AS Roma's heaviest ever European defeat and the biggest ever victory margin in the CL knock-out stages.

In this season's group phase, the Red Devils beat the Italians 1-0 at the Theatre of Dreams on 2 October,
through a Wayne Rooney goal in the 70th minute.
The return match in Rome on 12 December, ended 1-1 through goals by Gerard Pique and Alessandro Mancini.

European history

In the 1960-61 season, AS Roma won the Fairs Cup, their only piece of European silverware.
They have also reached two other European finals; the 1983-84 Champions Cup final, which they lost on penalties to Liverpool,
and the 1990-91 Uefa Cup final, which they lost 2-1 on aggregate to Internazionale.

Roma have never reached the semi-final stage of the CL in their history.

Manchester United have won three European trophies - the 1967-68 Champions Cup, 1990-91 Cup Winners' Cup and 1998-99 Champions League.

Last season, after knocking out AS Roma 8-3 on aggregate in the CL quarter-finals, United
were eliminated themselves by AC Milan in the last four, losing 5-3 on aggregate.

Current European form

AS Roma have not lost any of their last six Champions League matches and are undefeated at home in nine in this competition.

Manchester United are unbeaten in eight Champions League matches, since the

3-0 loss to AC Milan

in last May's semi-final second leg in Italy.
United are one of three unbeaten teams in this season's Champions League.
Chelsea and FC Barcelona are the others.

Player and disciplinary info

Simone Perrotta (AS Roma) is suspended for this match.
Mirko Vucinic, Marco Cassetti, Cicinho, Daniele De Rossi and Max Tonetto (AS Roma) are all one yellow card away from suspension.

Nani and Patrice Evra (Manchester United) will also be suspended upon receiving a yellow card.

Francesco Totti has made more appearances (36) and scored more goals (11) than any other AS Roma player in Champions League history.

Vucinic leads Roma goalscorers in this season's Champions League campaign, with four.

David Pizarro and Daniele De Rossi are the only AS Roma players to have appeared in all eight of their club's CL matches this season.

Portuguese defender Antunes (Roma) celebrates his 21st birthday on the day of the match.

Cristiano Ronaldo is joint top scorer in this season's Champions League having netted six goals.

Rio Ferdinand will play his 50th Champions League match if selected.
Ferdinand made his competition debut on 13 February 2001, for Leeds United against Anderlecht (2-1).

Nani is the only Manchester United player to have appeared in all eight of his club's CL matches this season.

Other miscellaneous facts

AS Roma drew 1-1 at Cagliari on Saturday with Francesco Totti scoring.

Roma are second in Serie A, trailing leaders Inter Milan by four points.

The Giallorossi recorded a 2-1 first-leg lead in the Italian capital 12 months ago but were then blown away in a

7-1 dismantling at Old Trafford

that marked United's biggest win in UEFA club competition since 1968.

• One year on Luciano Spalletti's men will try again, albeit knowing they have already suffered at the English champions' hands again
this season when losing a group-stage fixture 1-0 in Manchester.
That result on 2 October, secured by

Wayne Rooney's 70th-minute strike

ultimately meant United finished above Roma in Group F.

• The teams subsequently drew 1-1 in their final group match on 12 December, Mancini cancelling out
Gerard Piqué's 34th-minute opener with the Roma equaliser 19 minutes from time.

• The lineups that evening in Rome were:

Roma:

Doni, Cicinho, Matteo Ferrari, Philippe Mexes, Ahmed Apimah Barusso (Ludovic Giuly 62), Antunes, David Pizarro,
Mauro Esposito (Mirko Vučinić 62), Taddei (Daniele De Rossi 46), Mancini, Francesco Totti

Manchester United:

Tomasz Kuszczak, Danny Simpson, Gerard Piqué, Jonny Evans, John O'Shea (Wes Brown 54), Chris Eagles,
Darren Fletcher, Michael Carrick, Nani, Louis Saha, Wayne Rooney (Dong Fangzhuo 74)

Roma and United had never met prior to last season's quarter-final.
The Serie A side ran out 2-1 winners in the first leg on 4 April 2007, goals from

Taddei (44 minutes)

and

Mirko Vučinić (66)

• The lineups for that first-leg tie were:

Roma:

Doni, Marco Cassetti, Cristian Chivu, Philippe Mexes, Christian Panucci, Daniele De Rossi, Simone Perrotta,
Christian Wilhelmsson (Mirko Vučinić 62), Taddei (Aleandro Rosi 82), Mancini, Francesco Totti

Manchester United:

Edwin van der Sar, Wes Brown, Rio Ferdinand, Gabriel Heinze, John O'Shea, Cristiano Ronaldo, Michael Carrick, Paul Scholes,
Ryan Giggs (Louis Saha 77), Ole Gunnar Solskjær (Darren Fletcher 72), Wayne Rooney

• Six days later, on 10 April, United overwhelmed their opponents on a night where five home players -
Michael Carrick (2), Cristiano Ronaldo (2), Alan Smith, Rooney and Patrice Evra – featured on the scoresheet.

Daniele De Rossi struck Roma's goal.

• The lineups that evening were:

Manchester United:

Edwin van der Sar, Wes Brown, Rio Ferdinand, Gabriel Heinze, John O'Shea (Patrice Evra 52), Cristiano Ronaldo,
Michael Carrick (Kieran Richardson 73), Darren Fletcher, Ryan Giggs (Ole Gunnar Solskjær 61), Wayne Rooney, Alan Smith.

Roma:

Doni, Marco Cassetti, Cristian Chivu, Philippe Mexes, Christian Panucci, Daniele De Rossi (Ricardo Faty 86), David Pizarro,
Christian Wilhelmsson (Aleandro Rosi 88), Mirko Vučinić, Mancini (Stefano Okaka Chuka 90), Francesco Totti

• This is Roma's third quarter-final following previous appearances in the last eight in 1984 and last season.

In contrast, United are appearing in their 14th quarter-final.
They won nine and lost four of the previous 13.

Roma reached this stage by finishing second in Group F with a record of W3 D2 L1 and then overcoming Real Madrid CF in the first knockout round.

David Pizarro (24) and Mancini (58) scored the goals that earned a 2-1 comeback win in the first leg against Madrid
at the Stadio Olimpico and Spalletti's side secured an identical victory in the return where
Taddei (73) and Vučinić (90+2) struck either side of Madrid's Raúl González.

• For their part, United topped Group F with five wins and one draw and then defeated Olympique Lyonnais in the last 16.

Carlos Tévez's 87th-minute goal

earned Sir Alex Ferguson's side a 1-1 first-leg draw at Stade de Gerland before

Ronaldo scored the only goal

of the return after 41 minutes.

Roma are unbeaten in nine home matches in the UEFA Champions League,
a run that spans the last two seasons and comprises six wins and three draws.

United are one of three teams, alongside FC Barcelona and Chelsea FC, who remain unbeaten in this season's competition.
Away from home they have recorded two wins and two draws.

Roma's ten previous home encounters against English opponents have produced five wins, three draws and two defeats.
They won their first three two-legged ties against teams from England but have now lost their last four.

United have traditionally enjoyed little success on their travels to Italy,
losing ten and winning just two of 14 previous matches.
It took them eight attempts to record an away victory against Italian opposition, although they certainly broke their duck in style
by defeating Juventus 3-2 in the 1999 UEFA Champions League semi-final second leg.

• In two-legged ties against Italian teams, they have won three and lost four – the most recent a 5-3 aggregate defeat by
AC Milan in last season's UEFA Champions League semi-finals which was sealed by a 3-0 second-leg reverse in Milan.

• Prior to last season the Giallorossi had reached the last eight of Europe's élite competition only once before – in 1983/84,
the season they went all the way to the final before losing on penalties to Liverpool FC in the Stadio Olimpico.

Rooney has struck five goals in six games against Serie A opposition in the last two seasons.

Ronaldo had not found the net in the UEFA Champions League prior to last April's 7-1 win against Roma.
Including his two goals against the Giallorossi that night, he has now scored nine in his last ten appearances in the competition.

Simone Perrotta was born to Italian parents in the Lancashire town of Ashton-under-Lyme, a half-hour drive from Old Trafford
and also the birthplace of England's 1966 FIFA World Cup hero Sir Geoff Hurst.

Christian Panucci and Matteo Ferrari had short spells in the Premier League with Chelsea FC and Everton FC respectively.
Panucci spent part of 2000/01 on loan at Chelsea while Ferrari was at Everton for the entire 2005/06 campaign.

Edwin van der Sar played in Serie A between 1999 and 2001 with Juventus, while Mikaël Silvestre spent 1998/99 at FC Internazionale Milano.

His compatriot Evra also played in Italy in the late 1990s for Marsala Calcio and Monza Calcio but never appeared in the top flight.fj
