A Microsoft marketing team member has shot down speculation of the Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on being used for games, adding that next-gen DVD formats for games are unnecessary.
John Porcaro, group manager of online marketing communications wrote, "I'm seeing lots of speculation about our upcoming HD DVD Player, and whether we have plans to publish HD DVD games. The answer is no."
He said that Microsoft's intentions for the Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on have been clear since Xbox boss Peter Moore introduced the device at E3 in May. "... It is designed exclusively for playing HD DVD movies," he added.
Porcaro, who made the statement via the Microsoft Games Global Marketing journal, Gamerscore Blog, also took some time to downplay the need for HD DVD and Blu-ray game formats.
"At this point, we haven’t seen anything to suggest that next-gen DVD formats offer a better game experience than current DVD," he wrote. "What we do know is that these formats will bring added cost to game developers, disc manufacturing, and could even result in added costs and longer load times for the consumer, which would negatively impact the game experience.
"...Games like The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion clearly show that beautiful high def graphics and huge, immersive worlds to explore are possible on the DVD9 format."
Sony's PS3 will be using the high-capacity Blu-ray format. The company has said that the format will offer developers more legroom as games become larger and more complex.
Microsoft senior program manager Kevin Collins recently showed off the HD DVD add-on at the DVD Forum in L.A. The device should be available by the holidays. 作者: 店小七 时间: 2006-8-18 08:44
