"WHAT'S A ZUNE?"BY: JESSE SCHEDEEN
The Big Bang Theory
AIR DATE: APRIL 3, 2014
APRIL 3, 2014
Warning: full episode spoilers follow.

It's not always that you can link every subplot in a Big Bang Theory episode under one unified theme, but that was the case with "The Indecision Amalgamation." Each of the three conflicts this week (minus Benadette's little greeting card faux pas) revolved around tough decisions and characters struggling to find the right answer to their philosophical, moral, or consumer quandaries. While there wasn't enough space for all three stories to breathe, it was still an enjoyably cohesive installment.
Penny's latest career crisis was arguably the most crucial portion of the episode. After turning down the lead role in Serial Apist 2 a couple episodes ago, she found herself given another opportunity to don the fuzzy gloves and seek B-movie stardom. But her indecision was certainly understandable. Does she accept a role she's not excited about? Is the promise of a paycheck worth acting in a movie that could just as easily damage her career as boost it. It's a dilemma a lot of people have to wrestle with in some form or another in their professional lives. Penny is not typically a very sympathetic or identifiable character compared to some of the others, but episodes like this go a long way towards changing that.
And this subplot eventually led to yet another guest appearance from Wil Wheaton. As I understand it, this is actually the first time Wheaton has appeared in an episode and had no scenes with Jim Parsons. Despite that, or possibly because of it, it proved to be one of Wheaton's most memorable roles. Penny's struggle to build an acting career has its own parallels with Wheaton's career, where he rose to fame as a young actor thanks to Stand By Me and Star Trek: The Next Generation and struggled to move forward and be taken seriously as an adult. He had some sage advice for Penny, and I'd be very interested to know how much of his talk about depression and dreading auditions was pulled from his own experiences.
I only wish this conflict had been given a more definitive resolution. We never really learned why Penny chose to take the part and how she reconciled her needs and wants. The payoff at the end with Wheaton appearing in the orangutan costume was hilarious, but overall this plotline could have used a little more screen time.

We feel your pain, Amy.
By contrast, Sheldon's bout of indecision could have stood to be trimmed a little. Not that I didn't enjoy seeing him worry himself half to death in choosing between the Xbox One and Playstation 4, but his crisis lacked the immediacy and importance of the other two. Sheldon was so busy hemming and hawing about DDR3 RAM and Kinect cameras that he forgot the only question really worth asking - "Which system has the games I want to play?".
What made this portion work, however, was how the other characters were integrated into Sheldon's crisis. I chuckled at the results of his impromptu poll, with Raj voting Xbox, Leonard voting PS4, Wolowitz hedging his bets with both, and Bernadette chiming in with, "I really like the Wii!" But it was Amy who really shone in these scenes. She clearly could not care less, and seeing her mounting frustration was a lot of fun. The dinner scene, with Amy melodramatically feigning interest in Sheldon's chatter and then bellowing "PLEASE PASS THE BUTTER!!!" was easily the highlight of the week. It's one of my favorite Amy moments ever, in fact.
Finally, Raj had a very unusual problem in that he had multiple women vying for his attention. It was nice to see the writers actually follow up on his love interests, as they have a tendency to drop out of the show abruptly (what happened to Yvette the vet?). Just as Penny had a second shot at Serial Apist 2, Raj was given another chance with Lucy, the girl from the dating website he managed to scare away a few weeks back. This was the most well-rounded of the subplots. Raj delivered some laughs, particularly when he used his "panty-dropping" astronomy technique on Penny. And he also made some positive steps forward in the romance department. I like that Raj couldn't maintain his suave ladies man facade, and that admitting he was seeing multiple women worked out in his favor. Hopefully Laura Spencer will reprise her role as Emily again and we might see another long-term relationship develop for Raj, if not this season, then in Season 8.
THE VERDICT
The Big Bang Theory came back from another short hiatus with guns blazing. This was an enjoyable episode that explored several variations on the theme of indecision. It delivered some solid comedy, particularly where Raj and Amy were concerned. And it offered further momentum for Penny's acting struggles and Raj's love life. I wish Sheldon's Xbox/PS4 dilemma had been trimmed a bit in favor of more Penny material, but this was still a strong installment all around.
