Star Ocean: The Last Hope
Square Enix’s release strategy seems to involve building momentum towards the release of FF XIII. Infinite Undiscovery isn’t bad, but it doesn’t have as much going for it as Star Ocean. The Last Hope has at least a little bit of following due to a few other games in the series showing up in the States. There’s also a heavy sci-fi theme here that will excite those fans who find games such as Mass Effect and Dead Space compelling.
Tom Clancy’s H.A.W.X.
Ace Combat opened up the door for the modern military flyer on the X360, whereas Ubisoft has its sights set more on blowing it off the hinges. H.A.W.X. is a Tom Clancy-branded title, which has proven over time to be an almost sure-bet, regardless of genre. Flying is new territory for Ubi’s super franchise, of course, but our intel says that this is not a problem for these rookies of the skies.
WWE: Legends of WrestleMania
It’s understood that THQ puts out good wrestling games, but just like in any decent sports affair, licensing can often be a bear. You won’t find many classics grapplers in their modern games for licensing reasons, but that will change in ’09. We like our wrestling old-school, which means that Andre the Giant has to be in it somewhere. And not the fluffy Princess Bride version either—we’re talking about the mean dude that inspired the viral sticker and subsequent “Obey” T-shirt. You can create your own legend, too, although this shouldn’t be necessary with 40 of the WWF’s…er, WWE’s greatest on hand. Yeah, we smell what THQ is cookin’, but thanks for asking.
Battlestations: Pacific
Two flying games in one compilation? Well, Battlestations: Pacific isn’t all about flying even though you will enjoy that aspect of this WWII theater. Eidos already proved itself worthy of commanding an all-out sea-and-air onslaught in Midway, so it should be little surprise for its fans that Pacific has made our cut.
This time around, however, you’ll have additional choices on how to lead the good or bad guys to victory.
Whether played as an all-out RTS, flight simulator or fancy version of Sea Battle, Battlestations: Pacific is aimed at delivering WWII buffs historical accuracy on a large scale.
Fuel
Codemasters should be inspired by the sleeper hit that was ’08s Pure. Instead of leaving things on the edge of a friendly reality, Fuel goes off the deep end into one of the dimensions that brought us Mad Max. Oh, you’ll be racing, but in this case it’s more for survival, since Fuel takes place in an epoch where natural resources are dangerously scarce. An uncanny 5000 square miles of game space undoubtedly means marathon enduros will ensue. Codemasters also promised us highly varied terrains enveloping the roads to victory. Oh, yeah… big block engines, too.
Red Faction: Guerrilla
Ultra-powerful weapons specifically built for ending human life are nice, but there’s something oddly satisfying about killing via improvisation. THQ’s/Volition’s Red Faction is all about improvisation really—you wield a mining hammer for the brunt of the game, for those unaware. Yes, the environmental objects are all meant to be re-purposed for previously unintended usage, but it’s actually the environments themselves that become such sweet killing machines. Buildings made of separate, completely destroyable construction layers means that all of those hours studying statics in architecture school can finally pay off. We can’t wait for the (ahem) demo.
