1UP: First off -- are you still holding off on a PS3 version of Left 4 Dead? Gabe Newell: We don't have the bandwidth. For The Orange Box, EA did the PS3 version. They're interested in getting a PS3 version done. We just have to figure out where the resources can come from. We don't have the bandwidth. We're doing the 360 and PC version ourselves. 1UP: If there is a PS3 version, would you let EA do it, or would you like to actually dabble with the PS3? GN: I think we need to do a good job with supporting the PS3 with the Source engine. Our engine licensees would like us to do it. I think we need to invest more in getting that in there. So I think that we'll, over time, be directly more and more supporting the PS3 as our bandwidth allows us to. 1UP: The last few times that we've talked, you've been rather adamant about your dislike for the PS3. Has your stance changed? GN: Nothing has really changed about the PS3 in terms of what it is. I don't really have anything new to say one way or another. 1UP: How many campaigns are in Left 4 Dead? GN: There are four different campaigns. Each one is sort of its own self-contained horror movie in terms of the environments and situations that you face. 1UP: This seems like a game that would lend itself well to your style of episodic-content delivery. Is that something you have planned for the Xbox 360 and PC versions of Left 4 Dead? GN: Yes. It really feels like we're in this transition between entertainment as this packaged-goods phenomenon and entertainment as an ongoing service. TF2 is our product that's furthest along down this path -- we've been doing these updates every four to six weeks where we release new maps, new Achievements, new unlockables, new weapons, the movies like "Meet The Sniper," and so on. The response has been very strong. Each time we've done it, our multiplayer numbers and our sales have gone up by about 20 percent. So it's a way of growing an audience and developing an audience -- having those regular releases and thinking more of yourself as providing ongoing content streams seems to work really well. We fully intend to do that with Left 4 Dead as well -- [make] movies about each of the characters and how they came together as a team; what happened with the world when everything became Infected; [and] release new characters, new weapons, new campaigns -- and just view it as an ongoing audience-development content stream. 1UP: When are you planning on releasing the extra TF2 PC content on the Xbox 360? GN: So, we obviously like the PC, where we can update easily -- in some cases, we've done up to four updates in a single day. We really like that a lot. We view releasing the content as a way of building the community. What we're optimizing for is having the largest-possible and exciting-as-possible community for each game as we can. So that means that we don't want to charge for the updates, and we want to do them quickly. That's a lot harder to do on the console side. Just the way the console updates are structured -- they really want you to charge for them. In order for us to charge for the 360 update, we'd really like to have a lot more content there to justify the $9.95 price. What we want to do is do the same thing as we do on the PC -- release it for free and release it every four to six weeks. If we can't do that, then we want to aggregate enough of it so when we have to charge people, we don't feel bad about what they're getting there. We're pretty close in having a pretty compelling set of content for the 360 users. 1UP: The Heavy is out, so do you think that you'll wait for one more character update? GN: I don't know. [To Doug Lombardi] What's the plan? Doug Lombardi: I think we're going to start preparing everything that's been done to date and release that. My hunch is that it's going to be everything that's out as of now, including the Heavy -- and that'll be out before the end of the year. GN: It'll be $9.95, right? DL: Looks like it, yeah. 1UP: That's not bad. I think it's time for the 360 crowd to catch up. Are you going to do it for PSN as well? GN: No. 1UP: No? Lombardi: We don't have PlayStation developers, so.... 1UP: And EA won't help out on that front? GN: No. They're not doing ongoing development on The Orange Box for the PS3.
