BD的发行进度表中拥有众多受人瞩目的好莱坞高清大片,接下来的几个月里,制片公司将会推出一些重磅之作,例如《加勒比海盗:黑珍珠的诅咒》(Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl)、《加勒比海盗:聚魂棺》(Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest)、《博物馆之夜》(Night at the Museum)、《汽车总动员》(Cars)和《追梦女郎》(Dreamgirls)。

Why early high-def disc adoption rates don't really matter

By Eric Bangeman | Published: April 23, 2007 - 11:55PM CT
Blu-ray appears to be opening up a lead on its high-definition rival, according to first quarter sales figures gathered by Home Media Magazine. The numbers weigh heavily in Blu-ray's favor: 70 percent of all HD titles purchased by consumers were in that format. For the month of March alone, that figure was closer to 75 percent. Sales of Blu-ray discs also passed the 1 million mark since their launch. But there's a very big reason to take all of these numbers with several grains of salt; more on that later.

The Blu-ray Disc Association trumpeted the first quarter results, saying that the numbers show that Blu-ray sales have "taken off" since the beginning of 2007. "Blu-ray Discs have been outselling HD DVD by more than two to one since the beginning of the year and the gap is steadily widening," said Any Parsons, the Blu-Ray Disc Association's US Promotion Committee chairperson.
Here's how the numbers break down: eight of the top 10 HD titles during the quarter were on Blu-ray, with Sony's Casino Royale topping the list. That title sold an estimated 59,680 units, according to Nielsen's VideoScan sales data and industry estimates. The top-selling HD DVD title was The Departed in third place; the Blu-ray version was in second place.
Combined disc sales for the two formats neared the 1.2 million mark for the first quarter, breaking out into 832,530 Blu-ray titles and 359,300 HD DVD titles. Since their respective launches, there have been 1.2 million Blu-ray discs sold and 937,500 HD DVDs.
"It's exactly what we've said all along would happen—the strong support for Blu-ray among movie studio and equipment manufacturers means that consumers have more choices when it comes to players and titles," said Parsons. "And they're choosing Blu-ray by an ever-increasing margin."
And now for some more contextCompared to sales of movies on DVD—by far the most popular format—the numbers for the next-generation discs are a mere drop in the bucket. The top selling DVD for the week ending March 30 was Happy Feet, which moved over 4 million units that week alone. For the week ending March 11, Borat was the big winner, and the number two title, Peter Pan, sold 2.2 million discs.
If you do the math on Happy Feet and the Blu-ray version of Casino Royale, the latter title took three months to sell just under 1.5 percent of what Happy Feet was able to sell in its first week. Another dose of perspective: in the seven days after its release on DVD, Borat sold more discs than all HD DVD and Blu-ray titles combined since the launch of two formats last year.
In short, when we discuss HD DVD and Blu-ray at this point in time, we're talking about really small numbers. When sales are in the tens of thousands and not the millions, the market is especially susceptible to changes. It is true that Blu-ray has been building momentum this year, not unlike my three-year-old son working up a head of steam on his tricycle. Just as a big crack in the sidewalk can cause him to slow down or even wipe out, an unanticipated change in the market could have the same effect in the battle between Blu-ray and HD DVD.
One such change may come from Wal-Mart, which has reportedly contracted with a Taiwanese manufacturer for 2 million HD DVD players. Fuh Yuan will begin delivering the players to Wal-Mart in 2008, and the HD DVD players will sell for $299 each, if the reports are to be believed.
If true, the new players would be the cheapest standalone HD players available, as the current low-price leader is a $399 HD DVD drive from Toshiba. Naturally, there's a good possibility of price drops across the line as the 2007 holiday shopping season nears, which means that a $299 HD DVD player from Wal-Mart may not be such a great deal.
Regardless of its veracity, the Wal-Mart–enters-the–format–wars scenario illustrates the degree to which the nascent high-def market can be influenced by any number of external and internal forces. If Blu-ray is still outselling HD DVD by a three-to-one margin in two or three years, then we can definitively call this race. With volumes like what we're seeing now, however, it's like trying to call an election with less than 2 percent of the precincts reporting.
