GADGET DESIGNER Apple's iPad Mini 2 with Retina display reportedly is suffering from a screen glitch that could see the tablet delayed beyond November.
Korean website ETnews is reporting that the iPad Mini 2 with Retina display is suffering a "burn-in" issue with its LCD panel, which could see Apple delay its launch.
According to the report, this glitch is not visible to the human eye, but does not meet the "particular technological standards of Apple". It apparently is caused by the IGZO display technology used by manufacturer Sharp and the smaller pixels required for the new iPad Mini 2 with Retina display.
As a result of these issues, Apple reportedly is in talks with archrival Samsung about supplying display panels for the iPad Mini 2 starting next year, according to the website's industry sources.
The firm might also have to consider using a different display technology. One of ETnews' sources said, "If the burn-in problem is not solved, Apple will be in a fix. If Apple relaxes the technological standards for the burn-in, consumers perception of Apple may deteriorate, and if not, it will have to change its supply chain and delay the launch of the new product."
This report echoes previous rumours that Apple was suffering from a shortage of Retina display panels. With Sharp responsible for around 40 percent of iPad Mini 2 orders, and LG the others, it's likely that the report from IHS iSupply could have stemmed from these screen problems.
The research firm said last month, "The company has good reason to be coy about the exact release date, given that supply of the new [iPad Mini 2] is going to be ridiculously tight in the fourth quarter. The heart of the problem is supply constraints on the new Retina panel."
If the iPad Mini 2 is not delayed, expect it to arrive on shelves on 21 November.
